Delhi-NCR air quality: what the AQI numbers actually mean

A quick guide to reading the index and protecting your family on bad-air days

Illustration

The Air Quality Index turns pollutant levels into a single number from 0 to 500. Up to 50 is good, 101–200 is moderate, and anything above 300 is very poor or severe.

On very poor days, doctors advise limiting outdoor exercise, especially for children, older people and anyone with asthma or heart conditions. Well-fitted N95 masks help outdoors.

Check the AQI for your nearest monitoring station rather than a city average — readings can vary a lot between neighbourhoods.
