Kharge Calls for November 1 Rally to ‘Save Votes, Save the Nation’
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has urged people to join the November 1 rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, accusing the BJP and the Election Commission of putting voting rights at risk.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has appealed to people across the country to join the INDIA bloc’s “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1.
In a message shared on social media, Kharge accused the BJP of using money and pressure to influence people. He also alleged that the voting rights of millions of Indians were at risk and held Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar responsible.
Kharge claimed that the Election Commission’s actions were being taken at the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The rally is part of the Opposition INDIA bloc’s campaign against what it calls “vote chori”, or vote theft. The alliance says its aim is to protect voting rights and demand greater accountability from the Election Commission.
Why is the Opposition protesting?
The dispute centres on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This is a process used by the Election Commission to review and update voter lists.
The purpose of revising electoral rolls is to make sure that eligible citizens are included and that incorrect or outdated entries are addressed. However, opposition parties have raised concerns about transparency, the handling of voter records and the possibility of eligible voters losing their place on the list.
Kharge has pointed to questions about the software used during SIR and alleged irregularities in voter registration records in Uttar Pradesh. The Election Commission has declined to disclose certain software details in response to an RTI request, citing commercial confidence, trade secrets and intellectual property.
The refusal has added to the Opposition’s concerns about transparency. However, the refusal to disclose software details does not, by itself, prove that votes have been stolen or that voter lists have been deliberately manipulated.
What does the Opposition want?
Kharge has outlined the INDIA bloc’s main demands:
Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation: The Opposition wants the Chief Election Commissioner to step down and has also called for changes to the law governing the appointment and protection of election commissioners.
A halt to SIR: The alliance wants the revision process stopped immediately and says voters whose names were wrongly removed should be restored to the electoral rolls.
A return to paper ballots: The Opposition is demanding that elections be conducted using paper ballots instead of electronic voting machines.
These demands form part of the alliance’s wider campaign questioning the Election Commission’s handling of elections and voter registration.
What is the November 1 rally about?
The “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” rally is intended to bring opposition leaders and supporters together in Delhi. The INDIA bloc hopes to use the gathering to raise public awareness about its concerns over voter lists and the functioning of the Election Commission.
Kharge has appealed to citizens to participate, saying the issue is not limited to any one political party. He has presented the campaign as a fight to protect the Constitution, democracy and the right to vote.
The Congress and its allies have also been seeking support from other opposition parties for the planned mobilisation.
Has vote theft been proved?
This is an important distinction in the controversy.
The Opposition has accused the BJP and the Election Commission of electoral irregularities, but those accusations should not be treated as established findings without supporting evidence or official conclusions.
The Election Commission’s stated role is to maintain electoral rolls and conduct elections. Questions about voter registration, deletions and the use of software need to be examined through records, transparent procedures and appropriate legal or administrative review.
The current dispute is therefore about both the Opposition’s allegations and its demand for greater transparency in the electoral process.
What happens next?
The INDIA bloc has called on its supporters to gather at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. The rally is expected to be a major part of the Opposition’s campaign against alleged vote theft and the SIR exercise.
Kharge and the INDIA bloc want the government and the Election Commission to respond to their demands. The November 1 rally is intended to increase public pressure on those issues.
