Hyundai Motor Group to Invest ₹1.47 Lakh Crore in India by 2032, Plans Major Auto Expansion

South Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor Group will invest $15.5 billion in India between 2026 and 2032 to expand manufacturing, research, local supply chains and future mobility businesses.

Hyundai Motor Group to Invest ₹1.47 Lakh Crore in India by 2032, Plans Major Auto Expansion

South Korean automobile giant Hyundai Motor Group has announced plans to invest $15.5 billion (around ₹1.47 lakh crore) in India between 2026 and 2032. The investment is aimed at expanding manufacturing, strengthening research and development, supporting Indian suppliers and developing new automotive technologies.

The announcement came on October 13, 2026, after Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The company described India as a key market for its future growth and expansion into other emerging markets.

The investment will support the group's businesses, including Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, and help develop a wider automotive ecosystem in the country.

Where will the money be invested?

Hyundai's investment plan covers several areas of the automotive industry.

Manufacturing expansion: The group plans to increase production capacity to meet growing demand in India and strengthen the country's role as a global vehicle export hub.

Research and development: Around $700 million is planned for research and development infrastructure, including improvements to its Indian R&D centre and a vehicle testing track.

Local suppliers: Hyundai plans to work more closely with Indian companies to source vehicle components locally. This can strengthen domestic supply chains and create opportunities for parts manufacturers.

Future technologies: The group will invest in new mobility businesses, including electric-vehicle charging, vehicle financing, recycling and support for automotive start-ups.

Investment management: Hyundai also plans to establish a dedicated investment entity in India to coordinate and manage its investments across these areas.

The company has not yet provided a complete year-by-year breakdown of the $15.5 billion plan or a detailed figure for the number of new jobs it expects to create.

India already has a major role in Hyundai's global business

Hyundai Motor Group currently has annual vehicle production capacity of more than 1.4 million units in India. The new investment is intended to increase this capacity and strengthen India's position as a manufacturing and export centre.

For India, the plan could create opportunities for automobile component makers, engineering firms, logistics providers and technology companies. A stronger local supply chain can also help Indian businesses become suppliers to international markets.

However, the actual benefits will depend on how much investment is implemented, how production grows and how many jobs and supplier contracts are created. An investment announcement is a long-term commitment, not an immediate addition of the entire amount to the economy.

Hyundai wants 50% of its Indian vehicles to be electrified by 2030

Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO José Muñoz also described India as a model for the company's expansion in other countries. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum 2026, he said Hyundai's experience of building a local business ecosystem in India could guide its approach in other markets.

Muñoz said the company had continued with its long-term electrification strategy even as some competitors reconsidered their plans because of changing market conditions and financial pressures.

Hyundai aims for around 50% of its vehicles in India to be electrified by 2030. Importantly, this target includes battery-electric vehicles, hybrids, fuel-cell electric vehicles and CNG vehicles. It does not mean that half of all Hyundai vehicles sold in India will necessarily be battery-electric cars.

The company is also expanding its vehicle range. Reports say Hyundai plans to introduce 26 new models in India by 2030, although the timing and specifications of individual launches may vary.

Why is Hyundai investing so heavily in India?

India offers a large domestic market, a growing manufacturing base and access to a network of automotive suppliers. Producing more vehicles locally can also help global carmakers respond to local customer needs and use India as an export base.

The investment comes as international automobile companies face major changes in technology, trade policies and consumer demand. Carmakers must decide how quickly to develop electric vehicles while continuing to serve customers who prefer petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid options.

Hyundai's strategy is to expand its Indian operations while keeping different vehicle technologies available. Its leadership believes that the experience gained in India can help the company build stronger local operations elsewhere.

What does the investment mean for India?

The ₹1.47 lakh crore plan is significant because it extends beyond assembling cars. It covers manufacturing, research, suppliers, charging infrastructure, recycling and other mobility services.

If implemented as planned, it could support jobs, encourage technology development and give Indian suppliers more opportunities to participate in global automotive production. It may also strengthen competition in the domestic car market.

The key measure of success, however, will be the investment that actually takes place by 2032, the additional production capacity created, the technology developed in India and the employment and business opportunities delivered.

For now, Hyundai has made clear that India will remain central to its long-term global strategy. The coming years will show how effectively the company turns its investment announcement into manufacturing growth and a stronger automotive ecosystem.
