Lashkar-e-Taiba Leader Abu Hashim Dies in Lahore After Fall
Senior Lashkar-e-Taiba figure Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, also known as Abu Hashim, has reportedly died in Lahore after falling down stairs. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.
Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, known as Abu Hashim, was a senior figure linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a Pakistan-based militant group responsible for attacks against India. He was also known for his role in the group's financial network and its activities in Lahore.
According to reports, Sarwar was close to LeT founder Hafiz Saeed and had held a senior position in the organisation in Lahore. He was also associated with the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML), a political party widely linked in reports to Saeed's network.
How Did He Die?
Pakistani media reports say Sarwar was heading to a mosque for prayers when he fell down stairs in Lahore. The local news outlet 24NewsHD reported that he suffered a serious head injury.
Some reports said he fell from the fourth floor of the Markaz-e-Qudsia complex, while others described the incident as a fall on the stairs. A PMML spokesperson reportedly did not confirm the exact cause of death.
At present, there is no verified evidence that his death was anything other than an accident. The conflicting accounts mean that the precise circumstances remain uncertain.
Why Was He on the US Terrorism Sanctions List?
In December 2016, the US Treasury Department designated Muhammad Sarwar as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. US officials said he had helped Lashkar-e-Taiba raise and transfer money to support its operations. They also said he had led fundraising activities in Lahore.
His death raises questions about the future of the group's financial network, but there is no confirmed information yet about any changes to its operations or leadership.
