Oregon School Shooting: Four Killed, Including Three Children; 16-Year-Old Suspect Also Dead
Four people, including three children and a teacher, were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. A 7-year-old child and another teacher were critically injured.
A deadly shooting at an elementary school in the US state of Oregon left four people dead on Thursday, October 15, including three children and one teacher. The suspected shooter, a 16-year-old, was also found dead inside the school after the incident.
The shooting took place at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Police said two other people — a 7-year-old child and another teacher — were critically injured and taken to hospital. The incident led to a major emergency response, with police officers and other emergency workers rushing to the school.
How Did the Shooting Begin? According to Bend Police, the first emergency call came shortly before 1 pm local time. A caller reported that a person carrying a long gun had fired at a vehicle near the school.
Soon afterwards, more emergency calls reported that a person had entered the school and started shooting. Police officers reached the location within minutes. Officials said the suspected shooter was found dead inside the school shortly after officers arrived.
The police have not established whether the suspect knew anyone at the school or had previously attended it. Investigators are working to establish the circumstances that led to the attack.
Police Say Bystander Followed the Suspect
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said a local resident saw the suspect and followed him into the school. According to the police account, the resident confronted the suspect inside the building.
Authorities said the suspect was dead by the time police reached him. However, reports indicated that investigators had not yet fully established who fired the shot that killed the suspect. The circumstances of the confrontation remain part of the investigation.
Three Children and a Teacher Among the Dead
Police confirmed that the four victims included three children aged 5, 8 and 11, and a 54-year-old teacher. A 7-year-old child and another teacher were taken to hospital in critical condition.
The shooting has caused deep concern among families and residents in Bend, a city in central Oregon. Parents rushed to find out whether their children were safe, while authorities worked to evacuate students and reunite them with their families.
School District Cancels Classes
The Bend-La Pine Schools district cancelled classes and school activities scheduled for Friday, October 16. Officials said their immediate priorities were supporting students and staff, helping affected families and assisting law enforcement.
The FBI also joined local authorities in responding to the incident. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed grief over the deaths and thanked the community member who intervened, while recognising the emotional burden of the incident.
Investigation Underway
Investigators are examining how the suspect entered the school, what led to the shooting and whether he had any connection to the victims or the school community.
The incident has renewed concerns about school safety and gun violence in the United States. Schools are expected to be places where children can learn without fear, yet shootings continue to raise difficult questions about prevention, emergency response and access to firearms.
For families affected by this tragedy, the immediate need is support, accurate information and time to grieve. Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.
