Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Sells Out Fast in India; Delivery Delayed Until January 2027

Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, saw strong early demand in India, with estimated delivery dates reportedly moving to January 2027 within an hour of pre-orders opening. Here’s what it means for buyers and Apple’s foldable phone strategy.

Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Sells Out Fast in India; Delivery Delayed Until January 2027

Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, appears to have attracted strong interest from Indian buyers. Pre-orders opened at 5:30 PM IST on Friday, October 16, 2026, but reports said that estimated delivery dates for fresh orders had already shifted to January 23, 2027, within about an hour.

The phone is scheduled to go on sale in India on October 23. Customers who placed successful early orders may receive their devices around launch day, while those ordering later could face a wait of nearly three months.

The early response puts the spotlight on an important question: Is India ready to pay a premium price for a foldable iPhone, and what makes this device different from an ordinary smartphone?

What does “sold out” really mean? When a new phone becomes difficult to order, it does not always mean that every unit in the country has been sold.

In this case, the reported change in delivery dates suggests that the initial supply available for early delivery may have been booked quickly. Demand may have exceeded the number of devices Apple could deliver immediately.

However, delivery estimates can change because of several factors, including: - High demand: More people place orders than the available launch stock can fulfil. - Limited initial supply: A new product may be manufactured in smaller quantities while production is being expanded. - Manufacturing complexity: Foldable phones have more complicated screens and hinge mechanisms than conventional smartphones. - Logistics and distribution: Devices must reach different cities, retail stores and customers across India.

Therefore, the delivery delay is a sign of strong early interest, but it is not, by itself, proof of total sales, market share or the number of phones sold in India.

What makes the iPhone Duo different?

The biggest change is its foldable design. Instead of carrying a conventional smartphone and a separate tablet, users can unfold the iPhone Duo to get a much larger screen when they need it and fold it into a smaller device when they want to carry it in a pocket.

According to Apple’s official product information, the device has: - A 7.6-inch inner display when unfolded. - A 5.4-inch outer display when folded. - Apple’s A20 Pro chip. - Two 48-megapixel rear cameras. - A dual-battery system. - Split View, which allows users to work with two apps side by side. - Support for Apple Intelligence features, including the new Siri AI experience, with language and regional limitations.

These features could make the phone useful for watching videos, reading documents, editing photos, attending video calls and switching between work applications. For example, a business owner could keep an email open on one side of the screen and review a document on the other.

But the usefulness of a large screen depends on whether apps work well with it. A bigger display does not automatically make every app easier to use, and buyers should check that their most-used apps support the foldable layout.

Why are foldable phones attracting attention?

For many years, smartphone companies competed by improving cameras, processors, battery life and screen quality. Foldable phones introduce a different idea: change the shape of the phone to give users more screen space without requiring them to carry a full-size tablet.

A conventional smartphone has a fixed screen. A foldable phone attempts to offer two experiences in one device: a compact phone for everyday use and a larger screen for tasks that benefit from more space.

The category also gives manufacturers a way to distinguish premium devices from one another. For customers who already own an expensive smartphone, a foldable design may offer a more noticeable change than a small improvement in camera quality or processing speed.

However, foldables also involve engineering challenges. Their flexible screens and hinges are more complicated than the rigid displays found in conventional phones. Buyers should consider long-term durability, repair costs, warranty coverage and the availability of service before purchasing one.

Apple says the iPhone Duo has a precision-engineered hinge, protective materials and an IP68 rating for resistance to water and dust under specified laboratory conditions. That rating does not mean the phone is indestructible or that liquid damage is automatically covered by warranty.

Why is the Indian market important for Apple?

India is an important market for premium smartphones because customers range from first-time iPhone buyers to people upgrading from older iPhone models. A new product at the top of the price range can attract technology enthusiasts, professionals and customers who want a device that stands out.

The iPhone Duo could appeal particularly to people who want a large display but prefer to stay within Apple’s ecosystem. That ecosystem includes services and devices such as Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods.

Yet the early response must be viewed in context. A long delivery estimate indicates that buyers are interested in the product, but it does not tell us how many customers can afford it, how many will complete their purchases or how well it will sell after the launch excitement fades.

Apple has not publicly disclosed the number of iPhone Duo pre-orders in India. Therefore, any exact claim about the number of devices sold should be treated cautiously unless supported by reliable sales data.

How expensive is it, and who should consider buying it?

The iPhone Duo is positioned as a premium product, with Indian reports putting its price at around ₹3 lakh, depending on the configuration and applicable offers. Buyers should verify the exact price on Apple’s official India website before placing an order.

At this price, the phone is not a practical upgrade for everyone. It is worth considering if the foldable screen will make a meaningful difference to daily work or entertainment.

Before buying, customers should ask themselves:

- Will I regularly use the larger inner screen? - Do the apps I use support foldable displays? - Can I comfortably afford the phone without affecting essential expenses or savings? - Have I checked the cost of accidental-damage protection and repairs? - Would a conventional iPhone and a separate tablet offer better value for my needs?

A phone costing several lakh rupees should be judged by the value it provides over time, not just by its launch-day popularity.

Can customers still get the phone before January 2027?

Possibly, but an earlier delivery is not guaranteed.

Apple’s online delivery estimates may differ from the availability of units at individual retail stores or authorised sellers. Some stores may have limited launch-day stock, but customers should confirm availability directly rather than travelling on the assumption that a device will be waiting for them.

Those who want to order should check the official Apple Store website or app, review the current delivery estimate, and confirm the return, warranty and payment terms before making a purchase.

Customers should also be careful about unofficial sellers demanding extra money for supposedly guaranteed early delivery. They should verify the seller, obtain a proper invoice and avoid transferring money to unknown individuals.

What does this mean for Apple?

The iPhone Duo is an important test of whether Apple can expand the traditional iPhone experience into the foldable category.

Strong early demand could help Apple attract customers willing to pay more for a new design. It could also create opportunities for accessories, services and future foldable devices.

However, the first few hours of pre-orders are only an early signal. The longer-term result will depend on actual sales, production capacity, customer satisfaction, reliability and whether people find the larger screen useful enough to justify the price.

The bottom line: The iPhone Duo’s reported delivery delays suggest a strong start, but they do not yet prove a long-term sales success. For Indian buyers, the most sensible decision is to weigh the phone’s foldable design and practical benefits against its high price, repair considerations and actual availability.
