Rajasthan BJP Chief Madan Rathore’s Pakistan Remark Sparks Row; He Says Comments Were Misinterpreted
Rajasthan BJP chief Madan Rathore sparked a political controversy after a viral video showed him saying India would support Pakistan in a war with the US. He later said his remarks were taken out of context.
Rajasthan BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Madan Rathore has triggered a political controversy after a video of his speech at a public event in Jaipur went viral. In the clip, Rathore appears to say that India would stand with Pakistan if Pakistan went to war with the United States, because Pakistan is India’s neighbour.
Rathore made the remarks on Thursday, October 15, during a programme held at the BJP’s state office to mark the birth anniversary of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. He was speaking about Kalam’s values and the importance of living peacefully and helping neighbours.
The statement drew criticism from opposition leaders and sparked debate on social media. However, in a later clarification, Rathore said his words had been taken out of context and claimed he was referring to a cricket match, not a military conflict.
Why Was Rathore Speaking About Neighbours?
Rathore was addressing an event organised to mark the birth anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, India’s former President and a renowned scientist. He spoke about Kalam’s values, including simplicity, peaceful coexistence and helping neighbours.
During the speech, Rathore used a hypothetical example involving the United States and Pakistan. His statement about supporting Pakistan because it is a neighbouring country became the main focus after clips of the speech spread online.
Rathore Says His Words Were Taken Out of Context
On October 16, Rathore said his comments had been misrepresented. According to his clarification, he was discussing reactions to an India-Pakistan cricket match at a programme organised for members of the Muslim community, rather than suggesting that India should support Pakistan in a military conflict with the US.
He also said India-Pakistan relations remained strained and that the BJP’s position on Pakistan had not changed. His explanation has become an important part of the controversy, although the original video and its full context remain central to understanding what he said.
Congress and AAP Question the BJP
Opposition leaders criticised Rathore’s initial remarks and asked whether the BJP’s senior leadership agreed with him.
Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the statement. The Aam Aadmi Party also attacked the BJP, arguing that the party should explain its position on the remarks made by its Rajasthan chief.
The controversy has therefore moved beyond the viral clip to a wider political debate about national security, patriotism and how political statements should be interpreted.
Why the Full Context Matters
Short video clips can spread quickly on social media, but they may not always show everything said before or after a statement. In this case, the original remark triggered criticism, while Rathore’s later explanation introduced a different context involving cricket.
Readers should distinguish between the words heard in the viral clip, the criticism made by political opponents and Rathore’s own clarification. Reporting all three helps the public understand the dispute without treating an allegation or interpretation as an established fact.
